The latter doesn’t provide much flexibility and is likely to result in a certain level of compromise on how much you’re able to get out of each player, but the argument in favour of it is that if the tactic itself is structurally sound and the players do what’s asked of them, you’ll be hard to beat. There are two very basic schools of thought on formations: pick a shape that best suits the players at your disposal, or force your best players into a preferred formation and tell them to make it work.
